Did you know that Senators still file their campaign finance reports on paper? Did you know that this process of handing over giant piles of paper delays the disclosure of the contributors to Senate campaigns, sometimes for months? Sen. Russ Feingold has proposed legislation to stop paper filing and require Senators to file their campaign finance reports electronically. The Senate Campaign Disclosure Parity Act (S. 482), supported by a bipartisan cast, would require this change and it needs your help to pass.
While there is no public opposition to the bill, there have been successful attempts to derail the bill in the past. Last year, Sen. John Ensign attempted to attach a "poison pill" amendment that was not relevant to the bill. This year, Sen. Pat Roberts wants to introduce the same amendment in an effort to block the bill's passage.
The Sunlight Foundation, a nonpartisan pro-transparency group, has launched a campaign to pass S. 482. You can help out at the Pass 482 site by calling your Senators and asking them to cosponsor the bill and oppose the Roberts amendment. To help pass the bill, Sen. Harry Reid needs to know that there is widespread support for the bill and opposition to the Roberts amendment.
