Fiona Apple's Classic 'Criminal' Video Just Got A Lesbian Makeover

"Butch girls don’t get enough love in the media and they really, really should."

Comedian, actress, writer and musician Lane Moore debuted a new video this week with her band It Was Romance that reimagines the classic 1996 Fiona Apple video for “Criminal” in a lesbian framework.

The video for “Hooking Up With Girls” is a shot-for-shot remake of the “Criminal” music video, with the lyrics focusing on hook-up culture among queer women. For Moore, “Criminal” video and “Hooking Up With Girls” share similar themes of feeling conflicted and angry about the people you are sleeping with.

“This homage came from my lifelong love of and generally being in awe of Fiona Apple and that video and every record she’s ever put out,” Moore told The Huffington Post in an email. “I think certainly [’Hooking Up With Girls’] could be the hook-up culture anthem for anyone, but queer women really don’t have one, so I am thrilled if my song can be that for them. I’d also love for people to walk away thinking butch girls are super cute. Butch girls don’t get enough love in the media and they really, really should.”
