WATCH: Four-Alarm Fire Engulfs Upper East Side Synagogue

A four-alarm fire tore through an historic Upper East Side synagogue late Monday night.

Firefighters battled the blaze which engulfed the 139-year-old Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun. Five emergency workers suffered minor injuries, DNA Info reports. The synagogue had been undergoing some renovations, and luckily, there were no religious artifacts in the temple at the time of the fire.

About 170 FDNY personnel battled the blaze and brought the fire under control shortly before 10 pm, reports NBC New York.

Rabbi Haskel Lookstein, who has been a rabbi of the congregation for 52 years, told DNA Info that "I have complete faith that our community, which is 140 years old, will respond. We will rebuild what has been lost, and with God's help, we will go on."
