Garrett Wittels Rape Charges Dropped: FIU Baseball Star Cleared (VIDEO)

Rape Charges Dropped Against College Baseball Star

The rape charges against Florida International baseball star Garrett Wittels were officially dropped on Monday by the Bahamian attorney general.

"It's over. The fat lady has sung in the Bahamas," said Richard Sharpstein, Wittels' Miami attorney. "This diabolical scheme to ruin the names of these young men and extort money is over.

The nolle prosequi (no prosecution) was filed before a Bahamian magistrate Monday at 10 a.m., Sharpstein said. Authorities decided the evidence didn’t support prosecution.

Wittels was accused of raping a 17-year-old teenage tourist in December. Two of his friends, Robert Rothschild and Jonathan Oberti, also faced rape charges.

According to multiple reports, footage from the security camera appeared to contradict the women's story.

The 20-year-old went into this season riding a 56-game hitting streak, but went 0 for 4 in the season opener, ending his pursuit of NCAA history.

He was two hits shy of Robin Ventura 58-game Division I record set in 1987.
