Could more queer cops be coming to Fort Worth?
The Fort Worth Police Police Department made national headlines in 2009 when officers raided The Rainbow Lounge, sending one man to the hospital, and causing outrage in the LGBT community.
Now the department seems to be undergoing a rebranding process, and they are making what appears to be an active effort to recruit gay men and women for the force through a diversity initiative.
A recently released recruitment video features openly gay officer Chris Gorrie, who speaks to viewers about the importance of having a diverse police department.
While we're all for the move in theory, there are some portions of the video that made us uncomfortable. As Towleroad rightfully points out, Gorrie seems to engage in a bit of victim-blaming at different points in the clip:
If you establish yourself as a good cop, one that works and not one that's lazy, among your comrades prior to them learning that you're gay, there's less of a stigma or they have less of an issue with it. That's not to say there haven't been issues. I knew of a guy who came into the Academy and who was gay -- openly so -- and he blamed his failures on what he perceived to be discrimination. I don't think he was actually discriminated against, I just think he used that as an excuse.
