Gays Against Guns (GAG) was back in action this past weekend, staging a silent, spooky protest outside of the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) booth at the New Jersey State Fair as a vigil for victims of gun violence.
About a half dozen people from the ever-growing organization donned white shawls and wore images of gun violence victims around their necks as they passed out information to fair attendees.
“[It was] remarkable because there were far fewer people angry at our presence than people who genuinely wanted to hear what we had to say and cared as much as we do about routing out the NRA corruption in Congress that maintains the gun violence health crisis,” GAG said in a Facebook post early Monday morning.
GAG is an anti-gun LGBT organization that formed in response to the massacre that occurred in Orlando, Florida, on June 12, which killed 49 queer people, most of the queer people of color. The group has staged a number of demonstrations since then, including staging a die-in to shame NRA-supporting politician Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) and protesting alongside Queer Nation outside of Trump Tower. GAG also marched in the 2016 NYC Pride Parade, massing an estimated 800 people, and shut down two Reebok stores in response to the company’s sponsorship of the Crossfit Games, where the winners were reported to win handguns as prizes.
