Mother Opens Up About Learning GM's Car Malfunctions May Have Killed Her Daughter

In 2009, Renee Trautwein received the phone call that every mother fears. Her daughter, Sarah, had been killed.

When the Trautwein family initially found out about Sarah's death, they were immediately told that she had fallen asleep at the wheel while driving home early in the morning. However, when General Motors' airbag malfunctions were linked to a number of deaths, Renee started to question why her daughter died. "Then recently, the GM story kept haunting me and haunting me to where it wouldn’t end, and I called my brother and asked him if the airbag did indeed open because I could not see the car. I could not see the report," she said. "I was in a lot of pain over these years."

"And the answer was no, the airbags did not open," she continued. "So that’s when we started to investigate further and came to find out that it was the faulty vehicle."
