Google Street View Hits Boulder Bike Paths

If you've ridden the Boulder bike paths recently and come across a unique machine-man hybrid, we hope you weren't too alarmed. That cumbersome creature is merely the Google "Street View Trike," and it'll be capturing the city's bikeways for use by Google later this summer.

Boulder's Daily Camera reports Google selected the Boulder bike paths after an online contest nominated the city to be one of the first off-road locations visited. The team has already canvassed the entire 5.5 miles of the Boulder Creek Path.

They've also mapped the Stazio Ball Fields, Wonderland Lake, the Bear Creek Trail, Chautauqua Park and the paths around Boulder's recreation centers. They will continue their work Friday, if the weather cooperates, by mapping other parks and trails throughout the city.

Google's short video introducing the trike provides some amped-up music and a good idea of what the trike looks like. Imagine a 250-pound contraption comprised of an on-board GPS, a generator, and nine cameras mounted atop a pole in the back.

Other destinations for the tricycle include the Rochester Institute of Technology, the Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston, Mass, the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and the Detroit Zoo.
