Appearing on MSNBC's "All In With Chris Hayes" Tuesday night, The Guardian's Glenn Greenwald cast some doubt on the veracity of a statement, posted on the Wikileaks website Monday night, that was attributed to Edward Snowden.
The statement's odd wording caught the eyes of commentators, many of whom doubted that its stilted prose actually belonged to Snowden.
Hayes noted that Greenwald had spent time with the ex-NSA contractor, and asked him to weigh in on contentions that "the syntax and the voice of that statement did not sound even like a native English speaker."
"It seemed to me like the core ideas were very much consistent with how Edward Snowden thinks," Greenwald said, "but that it was sort of flavored with some person who isn't Edward Snowden."
While re-emphasizing that the statement's "philosophy" seemed in line with Snowden's, Greenwald added that there was a "virulent tone to it that didn't strike me as his own. Then again, he's a in a pretty stressful situation given that he seems to be in suspended animation in an airport."
In response to the Greenwald comments, Wikileaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson offered TPM a hedged response: "I can confirm that, as far as I know, this is from Mr. Snowden."
