A Miami Gardens family found a live grenade in their backyard Saturday just hours after an attempted break-in, prompting the Miami-Dade Police Bomb Squad to evacuate the neighborhood and detonate the grenade on the scene.

"Imagine! My daughter is always playing out there," said Natalie Rivera, who lives at the home near NW 48th Place and NW 178th Terrace. "If she would have grabbed it...it would have exploded. The house would have exploded! It would have ended up horrible, terrible."

Rivera told news outlets it all began when her burglar alarm went off early Saturday morning as someone attempted to enter the house through a bedroom window. Two men sped away in a white car, she said, but she thought the incident was over until her mother found the grenade.

The strange episode ended after Bomb Squad members buried the hand-made grenade in the backyard, according to NBCMiami, then detonated it from a safe distance.

"To do something like this, it's not something to rob, it's something [intended] to hurt," she said. Rivera said she couldn't think of anyone who would want to harm her or her family.

The incident is the second time in a month a Miami-area resident has found a grenade in her yard. On December 38, a woman raking leaves in Kendall discovered what she thought was a bullet, but turned out to be a live 40 mm grenade.
