We feared our chosen painting for this week's Guess The Artist was too easy, but yesterday a little less than 40% of you correctly identified the artist of this painting as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The painting is called The Kiss, and some of your correctly noticed that it is signed "Lautrec" on the lower right.

Born in 1864 to an aristocratic family, Toulouse-Lautrec (full name Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa), was a French painter, printmaker and illustrator. One of the most prominent artists of the Post-Impressionist period, Toulouse-Lautrec is best known for his depictions of the cabaret, circus, brothels and working class. Using a lurid color palette, Toulouse-Lautrec created unsentimental and provocative scenes of contemporary life. Throughout his life, Toulouse-Lautrec suffered from many physical ailments and alcoholism. He died in 1901, at the age of 36, due to complications from alcoholism and syphilis.

The Kiss is a sensual scene of two lesbians kissing on a bed. It is one of several sketches Toulouse-Lautrec did of the couple. To view more of his works, look through the slideshow below.
