New Mexico Senate Candidate To Skip Republican National Convention

New Mexico Senate candidate Heather Wilson is joining the list of Republicans who will skip the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., this summer.

Wilson, who is running against Democratic Rep. Martin Heinrich, will be campaigning in New Mexico during the convention, the National Journal reports. Heinrich plans to attend the Democratic National Convention in September, according to the Journal.

Wilson already faces an uphill battle against Heinrich in a state with a Democratic stronghold. GOP super PAC American Crossroads released an ad on Tuesday touting Wilson as an "independent voice for change."

Other Republican Senate candidates who will be absent from this year's convention include Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.) and Linda Lingle, who is running in Hawaii. A growing number of Democrats are also not attending the Democratic National Convention, signaling what will be a closely contested election cycle in many states.
