Among the crazy mishmash of ideologies, hypocrisy and good ol' batshit that is the roster of potential contenders for the 2012 Republican presidential candidacy, one man, who at first seemed very unlikely to be able to do so, has advanced to the top of the list, right behind Mitt Romney. That man is Herman Cain, the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza. Given the fact that the Republican Party has, of late, become the party of right-wing evangelical extremism, Cain must now work tirelessly to separate himself from Romney, who almost seems moderate by today's standards. Cain has jumped right in, dumbing down his rhetoric to the sublevel that appeals to the logic-defying mindset of the modern-day conservative.
For instance, during a recent appearance on ABC's The View, Joy Behar asked Cain whether he believes being gay is a choice. Cain answered, "Yes." When challenged by Behar to explain why anyone would choose to subject themselves to the vilification that homosexuals receive on a daily basis, Cain went on to say, "Well, you show me the science that says that it's not [a choice], and I could be persuaded. Right now, it's my opinion against the opinion of others who feel differently. That's just a difference of opinions."
In this case, the "others" Cain refers to include the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association, all of whom have conducted countless studies in the areas of sexual orientation and gender issues and all of whom agree that sexual orientation is not chosen, nor can it be changed. I doubt that any of this would matter to Cain. In an interview with CBS, Cain proudly proclaimed, "I believe homosexuality is a sin because I'm a Bible-believing Christian, I believe it's a sin. But I know that some people make that choice. That's their choice." Cain doesn't need science; he already knows being gay is a choice. So, why lie? Why would he assert that he would place any credence whatsoever in scientific evidence? The science is there. Herman Cain is just either too lazy or too stubborn to examine it. It's much more convenient to judge and hate based on his religious convictions.
Ironically, there is absolutely no scientific evidence to support the existence of God. Herman Cain seems to be just fine with that.
