This week, Sony Animation released a video on the production design of their Dracula-based animated movie, Hotel Transylvania 2. Even though the movie is animated, the set designers take their job very seriously. In the video, they talk about the set as if it is a real place.
2012's Hotel Transylvania was about a special getaway for monsters only. The hotel is a place they can go to hide out from humans and relax. However, everything goes haywire when a human named Johnny (voiced by Andy Samberg) gets in. The hotel is owned by none other than Dracula himself (voiced by Adam Sandler), who tries to keep the monsters from finding out about the human before he can be removed. Unfortunately for Dracula, his daughter, Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez), ends up falling in love with the guy.
In Hotel Transylvania 2, the two lovebirds are married and have a son. However, Dracula is concerned that his grandson, Dennis (voiced by Asher Blinkoff), is not exhibiting any vampire abilities. Dracula recruits his friends to help him out, some of whom are voiced by actors Steve Buscemi, David Spade, Kevin James, Keegan-Michael Key and Johnny Solomon. However, Dracula's dad, Vlad (voiced by Mel Brooks), gets into the fray and causes a ruckus.
It's no wonder, with such an amazing cast, that this new cinema franchise is doing very well. The first movie was such a financial success, it spawned the production of two more movies and a television series slated for 2017.
Hotel Transylvania 2 was released in September 2015, and boasts breaking the biggest ever opening weekend record of any September movie. The movie was just released on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday.
While watching the video on the production design of Hotel Transylvania 2, I started thinking that maybe there was a real Hotel Transylvania somewhere these guys are talking about, where they based their animation design on.
Production Designer Michael Kurinsky discusses the excitement of redecorating the hotel for Mavis and Johnny's wedding, including a ceremony by the pool. That part especially made me pause and wonder if I was watching a wedding planner or movie animator. Although, with the monsters in the scene, including a Bigfoot creature so large his feet are all you can see, unless it was some sort of Weird News ceremony, the only other thing it could be is an animated film.
The set is not real, of course. They just speak of their virtual sets as if they are real, and the results are a lot of fun. If you and your family enjoyed the movies, you will enjoy checking out this new behind the scenes video.
