Nobody in this world is unapproachable but in order to attract important people on your side, you need to do two important things: go above the line of super-credibility with your idea and create a great context to invite them in.

In any endeavor -- from raising capital for a small business venture to building a company that will mine asteroids or send humans to Mars -- you will need to attract important people on your side and convince them to offer you their support. The only way to approach somebody with your idea is to start above the line of super-credibility. Dr. Robert Richards explains how to go above this line with your idea.

Everybody can have a great idea. There are millions of great ideas out there. What's most important is to understand how you execute on your idea. It's very important that you set your bar above the line of super-credibility.

Each of one us has an internal line of credibility, a personal line through which we evaluate new ideas. When we hear an idea, we immediately place it above or below this line. When you approach somebody with your idea and you have absolutely no track record or heritage, if you drop below the line of credibility, they will dismiss your idea as being ridiculous. Even worse, in the first ten seconds they will dismiss you. If your idea falls above this line, they may be willing to give it the benefit of a doubt, learn more about it and continue to evaluate it using additional data.

  • Create a trustworthy context for them to come in
  • Go above the line of super-credibility
  • "People also have a line of super-credibility. When an idea is presented above this line they immediately embrace it and offer their full support. Launching your project in a super-credible way in fundamental." - Dr. Robert Richards

Don't say something that is so far away from what you've done that nobody will believe you. Use believable increments. Obviously you will not have everything mapped out perfectly from the very beginning but you must show how it can be done and that other people are already supporting you.

If you are just at the beginning with your idea, slow down and build super-credibility. Once you complete a small project and demonstrate that you can do it, you will be able to build on top of it and reach new connections. The small little project can be part of the big vision, but reach out to people with your very first step and be super-credible.

    Dr. Dragos

PS: The best way to go above the line of super-credibility is to surround yourself with people that will create a highly credible context. Who can you invite today to join your project or business, that will say yes and also offer you super-credibility?
