How to Build Your Online Audience When You Can't Market Like Every Other Entrepreneur

The other day I had this sick, disgusting feeling in my stomach. It wasn't the tacos I had eaten earlier. It was this feeling that I was being disingenuous to who I was.

Here's what happened:

I started doing a lot of live videos pushing my offers onto people. I was also strategizing which Facebook groups I would appear in to get my stuff seen by others. I started coming up with informational posts to attract people to my stuff, and it wasn't sitting right with me.

It wasn't because I didn't believe in what I have to offer. I believe as many people need to get into my program as possible! It was because marketing like that isn't me.

I don't want to knock on people who do this type of marketing. I believe those strategies work really well for many entrepreneurs.

But for some reason, I couldn't get the hang of it. I couldn't make live-streaming work, and I couldn't post regularly in groups. I felt like something was wrong with me and that I would never be able to make online business work.

Do you ever feel this way? Do you ever feel like because you can't market like every other rockstar entrepreneur out there, then you can't make online business work?

This is the pit I was driven to, until I realized something:

I am a creator more than I am a marketer.

Don't get me wrong: I love marketing my stuff. But I love marketing in a way that appeals to my creative side. For instance, I like writing out blog posts to market my stuff. I love building and writing sales pages. I like doing the creative side of marketing, only because I am more of a creative than a marketer.

And guess what? That's completely fine.

Online business does not penalize you for being more of a creative than a marketer, no matter how much you believe that's true.

Don't get disheartened because you can't catch on to all the marketing tactics that everyone else is doing out there. You CAN be more of a creative than a marketer. That's fine.

But of course, the keyword in that statement is MORE. I didn't say you could ONLY be a creative. You have to do some marketing, in the same way that a marketer has to do some creating. It's a balance, not one side or the other.

This tension gets hard for me to navigate sometimes, but now that I know I'm more of a creative, I can now market in ways that feel genuine to me.

And I know it's possible for creatives to build big audiences without being pushy marketers because I've done it before.

In my last endeavor, I built an audience of over 3,000 subscribers, just from putting my ideas out there. I didn't appear in Facebook groups or livestream everyday. I was writing content and being creative. That's what helped me attract my audience.

I say all this to provide hope for you creatives who want to build an online business, but feel like you lack the marketing personality to do so.

It is possible to build an online audience by being creative.
