Howard Kurtz On Libya: 'What Happened To The Media's Skepticism?' (VIDEO)

CNN's Howard Kurtz criticized the media for its coverage of the international air strikes on Libya, saying that the press was shirking its duty to be skeptical.

Speaking on Sunday's "Reliable Sources," Kurtz--also the Washington bureau chief for The Daily Beast and Newsweek--said the atmosphere reminded him of the beginning of the war in Iraq.

"What happened to the media's skepticism?" Kurtz said. "The media get excited by war...and sometimes something is lost in that initial excitement, It reminds me of eight years ago this very weekend, when Shock and Awe was rained down upon Baghdad and the media utterly failed to ask skeptical questions."

Kurtz said he had looked at the Sunday editions of the New York Times and the Washington Post and had found no doubts about the operation in the coverage.

"What if there's a long-term stalemate here?" he asked aloud. "What is this goes on and on? What if there are American casualties? Do you stop this operation with Gaddafi still in power? These are the questions I think we need to be asking."
