Illinois Science Boost: Fermilab, Argonne Get $48 Million in Federal Funds

Sen. Richard Durbin and Congressman Bill Foster are touting $48 million in funding for two Illinois lab projects.

The Illinois Democrats say the money for the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the Argonne National Laboratory is in the stimulus bill signed by President Barack Obama. The projects are a part of $1.2 billion in overall funding for energy projects announced Monday.

Fermilab will receive $34.9 million in funding. About $25 million of that is designated for infrastructure projects, with the remaining $9.9 million used for a neutrino detector.

Argonne will receive $13.1 million, which will be used to upgrade and replace major electrical switches and equipment.

Durbin and Foster say the funding will create construction and full-time jobs at both suburban Chicago labs.
