Ink Cartridges Banned, Other Security Measures Announced

The U.S. is banning ink cartridges over 16 ounces from passenger flights, as well as air cargo from Somalia, MSNBC is reporting. A ban on air cargo from Yemen is already in effect. The news was announced Monday by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who also said:

The Administration is also working closely with industry and our international partners to expedite the receipt of cargo manifests for international flights to the United States prior to departure in order to identify and screen items based on risk and current intelligence.

The new rules were prompted by suspicious packages found on U.S.-bound flights from Yemen. A new video released by U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki called for the deaths of more Americans.
