Jake Tapper Scolds White House On 'Indefensible' Wiretapping Claims

“Sometimes revisionism is so blatant, it’s not revisionism, it’s just a complete rewrite."

CNN’s Jake Tapper challenged the White House over its bizarre attempts to explain President Donald Trump’s claims that the previous administration spied on him.

Trump this month accused former President Barack Obama of wiretapping Trump Tower, but has yet to provide any evidence that this activity occurred. Instead, White House officials have tried to walk back Trump’s claims. Press Secretary Sean Spicer insisted that the president was speaking more broadly than just wiretapping and Kellyanne Conway even suggested that the surveillance may have been conducted through “microwaves that turn into cameras.”

But Tapper isn’t buying it.

“Sometimes revisionism is so blatant, it’s not revisionism, it’s just a complete rewrite,” he said. “The White House is now spending its energy and your tax dollars trying to change demonstrably false assertions into perfectly understandable beliefs tangentially related to the original lie. While doing so, they’re squandering their own credibility, and they’re wasting time defending the indefensible, instead of devoting time to, say, improving your lives.”

“We as a nation have had to live in this farce for the past nine days,” Tapper added.
