James Holmes' Computer Search History Included Term: 'Rational Insanity'

James Holmes' Browser History Search Reveals Surprising Find

A forensic detective says that the term "rational insanity" was found in the web browser search history of a computer belonging to Colorado theater shooting suspect James Holmes.

The Associated Press reports that Aurora Police Detective Michael Leiker testified during the pre-trial hearing for Holmes on Thursday that the "rational insanity" search term was found on the Bing search engine on a computer that he examined during the theater massacre investigation.

The prosecution is attempting to prove that a sane Holmes methodically carried out the deadly theater shooting. They seek the death penalty.

7News reports that Leiker also said that web searches related to weapons, firearms, ammunition and movie theaters were also discovered on the computer.

The prosecution presented 12 pages of electronic records that were gathered from emails, photos, text messages, web browser histories gathered from James Holmes' iPhone, iPod touch, tablets and computers during the course of the investigation, according to The Denver Post. But Holmes' defense wants the digital evidence excluded over concerns it may have been gathered in violation of Holmes' constitutional rights. It wasn't clear who performed the search nor when the search was performed on the computer.

Earlier in the week, the defense also asked for evidence gathered from online dating profiles which allegedly belong to Holmes to be thrown out over the same concerns.

Attorneys for Holmes admitted that he killed 12 people and wounded 70 others in the Aurora movie theater on July 20, 2012, but that he was "in the throes of a psychotic episode" at the time. Charged with 166 counts of murder, attempted murder and other crimes for the July 20 shooting at the midnight screening of "Batman: The Dark Knight Rises", Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
