A Texas man accused of killing his ex-wife and abducting their 4-year-old son has been captured and the boy is reportedly safe.
Officials in West Monroe, La., arrested James Calvert, 41, late Wednesday night in West Monroe. His son, Lucas, is safe according to Don Martin, chief of the Tyler, Texas Police Department, which issued an Amber Alert yesterday after the suspect allegedly murdered his ex-wife, Jelena Radovanovic Sriraman, 30, and escaped with the child.
Calvert was pulled over during a traffic stop in a 2000 Buick LeSabre with fake license plates, cops said. At first, he started a slow roll which turned into a short high-speed pursuit that ended in a minor wreck, KLTV-TV reported.
Martin told the Tyler Morning Telegraph that Calvert did not come out of the vehicle, forcing police to break the windows to get him out of the car, but they did so without firing any rounds.
Officers recovered two guns in the car, the Associated Press reported. Calvert is currently being held in Louisiana on $2 million bail while authorities work out the details involved in extraditing him back to Texas.
Calvert had previously been charged with aggravated assault family violence in 1999, according to the Longview News-Journal.
Calvert has also been in jail on three charges of violating a protective order since 2009, the Dallas Morning News reported.
