Japan Announces Aggressive Emissions Program While Failing To Meet Kyoto Protocol

TOKYO (AFP) - Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda said Monday that Japan would aim to cut greenhouse gas emissions blamed for global warming by 60 to 80 percent by 2050 from current levels and launch an experimental carbon market.

He said that Japan would next year also set a mid-term target -- the topic of ongoing international negotiations -- for slashing emissions after the Kyoto Protocol's obligations for rich nations run out in 2012.
