It’s a rare thing to see Jimmy Kimmel, former host of “The Man Show,” tear up onstage. But last night, Kimmel spent over a dozen minutes of his late-night monologue recounting the story of how his newborn son recently came into this world and nearly didn’t survive.
Due to a heart disease, Kimmel’s son, William “Billy” Kimmel, needed open-heart surgery at just 3 days old, after Kimmel and wife Molly McNearney welcomed him on April 21. Through the work of various doctors and nurses, including the staff at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and California’s Cedars-Sinai Hospital, Billy successfully underwent the procedure. Kimmel took the opportunity to remind viewers that children, and the hospitals that specialize in children’s care, are affected by budget cuts to health care.
The “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” monologue quickly went viral and already has more than 1 million views on YouTube alone. This morning, McNearneyy shared a follow-up photo on Twitter of her smiling husband with the baby.
“I am thankful to love and be loved by these two brave guys. Both criers,” McNearney wrote along with the photo.
Many friends and fans, have tweeted support to Kimmel and McNearney over the last few hours. Below are a few highlights:
Hillary Clinton shared the piece as a conversational starter about health care.
Kimmel’s longtime friend and former employee, Bill Simmons, shared his love.
... as did Julia Louis-Dreyfus ...
... and comedian Mike Birbiglia, who said he “cried for 13 minutes straight” while watching.
And no roundup of high-profile Twitter reactions would be complete without Billy Eichner ...
