John Oliver Blames The Wealth Gap For Killing The American Dream

This Is Why You'll Never Achieve The American Dream

Sorry, America. Not everyone gets a third date with Beyoncé.

The "American Dream" tells us that if you just work hard enough, you can achieve anything. But like Gordon Ramsay yelling about bland potatoes, John Oliver is here to give us a harsh British spoonful of reality.

In his 14-minute-long diatribe against income inequality, Oliver explains why the staggering wealth gap proves America is definitely not a nation of haves and soon-to-haves. The "Last Week Tonight" host also exposes the Estate Tax, a.k.a. "The Death Tax," as a political rallying point that could be causing Americans to act against their own best interests.

The segment is powerful and informative, but it still leaves us wondering if we'd take our lottery winnings in a lump sum payment or opt for an annuity.

"Last Week Tonight" airs Sundays at 11:00 p.m. ET on HBO.
