Former major-league slugger Jose Canseco announced this week that he plans to “live as a woman” for a seven-day period in solidarity with transgender former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner.

Canseco, who retired in 2001, will broadcast the experience on his Internet show “Spend a day with Jose,” according to TMZ. While he admits that he wasn’t initially supportive of Jenner’s transgender identity, he later had a change of heart.

“In the very beginning, I didn’t understand it, so I was kind of like, against it,” Canseco reportedly stated. “Once I watched it more and more, and realized what it really entailed, what he [sic] was going through, I started supporting him [sic].”

While Canseco's intentions seem genuine, it is worth noting that the nuances of transgender identity go beyond merely gendered clothing and feminized self-presentation.

Former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner first confirmed her transgender identity during a sit-down interview with Diane Sawyer in April 2015. She later appeared as her authentic self on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine on June 1 and recently took home the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2015 ESPY Awards.
