Actor Kal Penn spoke at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night, in a speech that was well-received if over-shadowed by electrifying appearances by First Lady Michelle Obama and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro.
Penn gave an ardent defense of the Obama administration, but his clever dig at Clint Eastwood was certainly among the speech's highlights. "I've worked on a lot of fun movies, but my favorite job was having a boss who gave the order to take out Bin Laden and who's cool with all of us getting gay married,” Penn said. “So thank you invisible man in the chair, for that, and for giving my friends access to affordable health insurance and doubling funding for the Pell Grant."
The comment was an obvious reference to Eastwood's speech at last week's Republican National Convention. At that event, the 82-year-old actor engaged in a rambling conversation with an empty chair, in which an imaginary Barack Obama was apparently seated. The president responded in an interview by saying he was a "huge Clint Eastwood fan."
