Salsa singer Linda Viera Caballero, better known as “La India,” took a beating that left her hospitalized early Monday morning with a broken nose and a hematoma with internal bleeding, local media report.

Police found Viera Cabellero, 44, in her boyfriend’s house after receiving a 911 call and took her to the emergency room. They suspect her boyfriend, Javier Padilla González, of attacking her.

“The police visited the scene and concluded that it was an incident of domestic violence,” agent Roberto Alejandro Díaz said, according to Univisión.

A source close to the singer offered another story. An assistant to Viera Caballero, identified as “Normita” by Puerto Rican daily El Nuevo Día, said La India was attacked “by some gringos” earlier in the evening.

That wouldn’t explain why one of Viera Caballero’s neighbors called 911 concerned about screaming, however.

Normita went on to say that the singer was surprised that police had detained Padilla González, El Nuevo Día reports.

La India performed on March 17 at the 30th annual National Salsa Day at the Hiram Bithoron stadium in the Puerto Rican capital of San Juan.
