If a recent campaign flyer is any indication, a Republican state Senate candidate's selling point in 2010 is now seen as his political liability in 2012.
Fox31 in Denver pointed out on Wednesday that a campaign mailer for Lang Sias' failed bid for Colorado's 7th congressional district has been reused and edited for his state Senate run. There's one major alteration, however: A yellow placard on a supporter's poster that read "Tea Party Endorsed" in the initial mailer is now blank.
The original mailer was first circulated two years ago, when populist fervor fueled a Republican takeover of the U.S. House of Representatives. Sias was then challenging Aurora City Councilman Ryan Frazier in a GOP primary to replace Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.).
Sias, a former staffer for Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) presidential campaign, is running against Sen. Evie Hudak (D) in Colorado Senate District 19, competing for a more moderate constituency that's "almost evenly split between Republicans, Democrats and unaffiliated voters," according to Fox31.
Sias' campaign did not return repeated requests for comment on Thursday.
At least one local Democrat is already pouncing on the apparent Photoshopping as a telling example of Sias' lack of political principle.
“I just think it’s a sign of the times,” Colorado state Sen. Betty Boyd (D) told Fox31 on Tuesday. “I think he is just blowing in the wind. He thought it would help him before."
