Talk about turning lemons into lemonade.
Lauren Roach, 12, and Landry Nelon, 11, used a lemonade stand to raise $10,000 in two days for the families of the five police officers killed by a sniper in Dallas on July 7.
“At first it was just a lemonade stand and then what happened to the police in downtown Dallas made me realize that families out there were in need of money,” Landry told Fox 4.
On July 11, decked out in matching silver sandals, the girls presented a $10,000 check to the five families at the Dallas Police Association building, still in awe of their accomplishment.
“At first we thought we would get about $100, but after we got to about $5,000, we realized we could really get this really high up,” Lauren told NBC DFW.
Over the course of a weekend, the girls — with the help of 9-year-old Emmy Roberts and her 8-year-old sister, Lily — sold about 20 gallons of lemonade as well as cookies and brownies to people passing by on foot and in cars by waving colorful posters.
According to Tracey Roach, Lauren’s mom, some people didn’t even buy the girls’ sweet treats and just gave donations as soon as they realized why the girls were raising money. Lauren and Landry’s church also matched part of the earnings.
“It feels good to know we are making a difference in people’s lives,” Lauren told WFAA. “That makes us feel great inside.”
