Legends Of La Cienega 2011: Celebrate Art

Design and art collided at the third annual Legends of La Cienega weekend in West Hollywood. This year's theme, "Celebrate Art," was a fete of fashion, architecture, and design across three days of cocktail parties, power lunches, brunches, and panel events in the La Cienega Design Quarter.

Even if you couldn't make it this weekend, pay a visit to the neighborhood to take in the over 30 storefront displays decorated by prominent interior designers. The displays pay homage to fine artists like Piet Mondrian, Frida Kahlo, and Jackson Pollock, making for what Patch West Hollywood called a neighborhood "pop-up art exhibit." The storefronts will be up until the end of the week.

On Saturday afternoon, artist and arts editor of the Huffington Post Kimberly Brooks moderated a panel on "Extra-Sensory Design" with stylists from the fashion, automobile, and interior design industry. Other events that day included a panel on how to "Sex Up Your Space" (hint: red velvet and bear skin rugs are not the way) moderated by Erin Geher, managing editor of California Home+Design, and a panel called, "Edit, Undo," moderated by California Homes Magazine editor-in-chief Susan McFadden. The panel focused on how to "deprogram" clients' notions of "budget-home renovations" and "misguided internet persuasions."

Attendee Sandra Vila, a Southern California interior designer, found personal inspiration and industry-wide affirmation from the Legends of La Cienega events. She shared with HuffPost: "I got a lot out of hearing that at the end of the day, quality will sell and you need to stick to your guns on the type of work you produce... You've got people trying to copy someone else's work, or do the same thing for less, but at the end of the day there's a large market for everybody, and there's always people willing to pay for something if the quality is there.
