"Les Miserables" could soon be a TV show, thanks to "Veronica Mars" creator Rob Thomas.
According to Deadline, Thomas has teamed with writer/actor Graham Norris to develop a modern-day adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic novel, described as a "primetime soap about a brilliant lawyer running a legal exoneration program who fights to evade the consequences of his own unjust conviction many years before. He must navigate high society, continue his mission of saving innocent people, and manage his tumultuous family and romantic life -- all while staying one step ahead of a ruthless U.S. Attorney who refuses to let the ghosts of the past die."
The project is currently at Fox with a script commitment plus penalty, and is being produced by Warner Bros. TV and Rob Thomas Prods. Tom Hooper's 2012 film retelling starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, and won Hathaway Best Supporting Actress. The musical theater version of "Les Miserables" has run continuously in London's West End since October 1985, making it the second longest-running musical in the world after "The Fantasticks." It was open on Broadway from March 1987 until May 2003, then from 2006 to 2008, and will return for a second revival in March 2014.
Thomas is currently working on the long-awaited "Veronica Mars" movie, which was funded via Kickstarter earlier this year.
