Few people are skilled enough to play professional sports - let alone collegiate sports. But everyone can play Weird Sports. It's not about winning or losing. It's about dressing up in costume, making each other laugh and drinking a lot of cheep beer.
The first Weird Sport I photographed was roller derby in Seattle. It was 2005, so it was very early on in its renaissance. I thought it was cool that it was making a comeback. And everyone was having such a blast. I felt a connection with those people following their passions on their personal time.
To be honest, when I started, I was simply looking to make fun photos. I love sports and I love squirrelly scenarios. The more weird sports I discovered, the more I became addicted to photographing them. Next thing I knew, I was out of control, flying across the globe trying to top the fun, visual experience from the previous weird sport.
Maybe my favorite weird sport is Kaiju: live monster wrestling based in Boston. Think of Godzilla-like characters in a pro wrestling format. I shot it again recently in Las Vegas with a good friend, Tiffany Brown, who said she heard me laughing all night long.
Sometimes I'm tempted to take part in Weird Sports. But to be honest, I so love being a photographer, documenting the silliness. I feel my role in life is to share the weirdness with the world.
