When Lisa Miller of Gainesville, Ga., started playing the Facebook game, FarmTown, she had no idea that she would end up saving the life of a woman in Idaho.
According to CBS Atlanta, Miller befriended a woman in Idaho over the online game, and found out that the woman's daughter, Tiffany, who was in her late-20s with a small son, was in need of a life-saving organ transplant.
Miller reached out to Tiffany (who did not want her last name disclosed for privacy reasons) and quickly became friends with her, talking over Facebook and the phone.
"I really needed to help her out," Miller told CBS Atlanta.
Over the last three years, Miller made it her mission to find a kidney donor for Tiffany. She used every resource at her disposal -- Facebook, her friends, and word-of-mouth. What she didn't realize, however, was that the perfect donor was living in her own home.
A few months ago, Miller asked her husband, Chris, if he was willing to see it he was a match for Tiffany's blood type.
"She asked me, 'Do you want to get tested?' I said, 'Sure.' I didn't think anything of it," he told CBS.
Chris was indeed a perfect match for Tiffany. He didn't hesitate to offer his kidney to the ailing girl, reports KSLA.
"She needs a better life. She's on dialysis twice a week and it's the right thing to do," he said of his decision.
A few months ago, Lisa and Chris Miller traveled to Spokane, Wash., where Tiffany is being treated. They met her for the first time in person and that's when they told her the good news.
The surgery is scheduled for January and will take place in Washington.
"It's really awesome because I can share it with him and her," said Lisa.
"I’m so excited for this surgery, I just wish it was tomorrow," Chris added.
According to the Gainesville Times, the Millers haven't stopped there -- they are also organizing a fundraiser to help with Tiffany's post-operation expenses and to provide her and her son a mini-vacation, something they haven’t had in years.
"There are a lot of things that this young girl needs. Yes, she’s getting my husband’s kidney. A lot of people say ‘Why are you doing this? You’re already giving her a kidney.’ Well, we want to make sure this kidney survives. We aren’t giving her this kidney to last today, we’re giving it to her to last a lifetime," Lisa said.
