"Little Miss Sunshine" is having a moment.
This July, "Sunshine" co-directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Farris return to the big-screen with "Sunshine" co-star Paul Dano in tow for "Ruby Sparks," an indie dramedy written by Dano's girlfriend, Zoe Kazan. Now, Variety has word that Steve Carell and Toni Collette will stage their own "Sunshine" reunion in the comedy "Way, Way Back." The film marks the directorial debut of Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, the Academy Award-winning co-writers of "The Descendants."
"Back" -- which already has Sam Rockwell and Allison Janney attached to star -- tells the story of a young boy who must deal with his cheating stepfather and distant mother while on a summer vacation. Carell would play the dad; Collette the mom.
This is a busy time for Carell, who seems to get attached to a new project every day. In addition to "Way, Way Back," Carell has seen his name affixed to "Foxcatcher" (with Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo), "Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day" (for director Lisa Cholodenko) and "Frank or Francis" (Charlie Kaufman's latest mind-eff). He's also starring in "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" (out this summer), "Burt Wonderstone" and the sequel to "Despicable Me."
While Carell is busy, he might have time to do most of these. "Way, Way Back" is set to shoot this summer, with "Foxcatcher" going before cameras in October. Of course, whether "Foxcatcher" happens at that time remains unclear. According to Indiewire's blog The Playlist, its director, Bennett Miller, might be on the not-so-shortlist of Gary Ross replacements for "Catching Fire." The "Hunger Games" sequel is set to begin shooting in late August or early September.
