Marijuana Pinatas: 425 Pounds Of Drugs Found In Arizona Shipment From Mexico

425 Pounds Of Marijuana Found In Piñata Shipment

These piñatas aren’t for kids.

Police found more than 425 pounds of marijuana in a shipment of piñatas crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona last week, according to CBS 5 Arizona.

Drug-sniffing dogs detected the drugs on a truck driven by 24-year-old Tucson native Juan Marcelo Armstrong.

Armstrong did not actually stuff the marijuana into the piñatas. Instead, he hid the marijuana behind a false wall in the truck, and used the load of empty piñatas as a decoy.

It’s an unusual way to smuggle drugs across the border, but hardly the most creative one. Drug traffickers have catapulted marijuana across the U.S.-Mexico border, built underground tunnels complete with railcar systems, and planted drugs on unsuspecting crossers known as "blind mules."

According to the Phoenix New Times, Armstrong said he was paid $3,000 to smuggle the marijuana across the border. He will now face charges of possession and intent to distribute.
