Alan Alda, Candice Bergen, and Christiane Amanpour were there. But the real star of the evening was an 8-year-old Ethiopian boy.

Friends of Marilyn Berger (and her late husband "60 Minutes" creator Don Hewitt) came out to the New York Public Library Tuesday night to celebrate the publication of her book, "This Is A Soul."

The book focuses on Dr. Rick Hodes, who has spent his life helping children in Ethiopia. In the course of researching the book, Berger met a little boy suffering from spinal tuberculosis in the streets of Addis Ababa; she eventually took him in as her own.

That little boy, Danny Hodes -- New-York-ified in a navy blazer, striped sweater, and khakis -- was the toast of the party Tuesday night.

"Don used to look at Danny and say, 'Whatta boy!'" Alda said Tuesday night. "And tonight we celebrate Rick, whatta guy! And Marilyn, whatta girl!"

Also on hand for bell pepper-flavored martinis in the Library's Trustee Room were Marshall Rose, Pete Peterson, Joan Ganz Cooney, Nora Ephron, Nick Pileggi, Phil Donahue, Marlo Thomas, Ken Auletta, Binky Urban, Linda & Mort Janklow, Bud Trillin, Itzhak Perlman, Allen Grubman, Judy Miller, Paul LeClerc, Bill Cunningham, Holly Peterson, and Esther Fein.
