Matthew McConaughey Wins Best Actor - Drama At 2014 Golden Globes Awards

Matthew McConaughey Wins Best Actor

Matthew McConaughey took home the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for "Dallas Buyers Club" at the 71st annual Golden Globe Awards.

McConaughey topped Chiwetel Ejiofor ("12 Years a Slave"), Idris Elba ("Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom"), Tom Hanks ("Captain Phillips") and Robert Redford ("All Is Lost").

This marks McConaughey's first Globe nomination or win. He's seen a steep career surge over the past couple of years, choosing to distance himself from the fluffy rom-coms he was previously known for in favor of dramatic work like "Buyers Club," "Mud" and last year's "Magic Mike."

The actor's Oscar buzz has remained steady throughout the year. He's collected nominations from the Broadcast Film Critics Association, Independent Spirit Awards, Satellite Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Recent winners for Best Actor - Drama include Daniel Day-Lewis ("Lincoln"), George Clooney ("The Descendants"), Colin Firth ("The King's Speech") and Jeff Bridges ("Crazy Heart"). Over the past 10 years, seven of the Golden Globe winners in the category have gone on to nab the Oscar as well.
