Mazie Hirono Election: Hawaii Rep Battles Former Gov. Linda Lingle For Senate Seat

Hawaii Senate Race Pits Popular Dem Against Popular Republican

The retirement of Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) after three terms opened up the opportunity for what many thought would be a competitive Senate race. But once Rep. Mazie Hirono, who represents Hawaii's 2nd District, defeated former Rep. Ed Case in the Democratic primary, she staked out a large lead over her Republican opponent, former Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle.

While The Weekly Standard recently advanced an odd theory that Lingle has a secret advantage based on time zones, the most recent polls suggest that Hirono is a shoo-in. As of this writing, Hirono enjoys a substantial lead in the HuffPost Pollster model: 55.3 percent to 38.4 percent.
