The 29th annual Miami International Film Festival starts Friday with the world premiere of Tom Gustafson’s Mariachi Gringo. In the opening night film, an American travels to Guadalajara to pursue Mariachi music.
Later in the weekend, MIFF screens the U.S. premiere of Chinese Take-Away, the biggest home-grown box office success of 2011 in Argentina.
Through March 11, MIFF will screen over 100 films from over 35 countries, including 7 world premieres, 10 North American premieres, and 10 U.S. premieres.
New this year, the film festival will have free public screening of 20 shorts projected on MIFF’s Festival Village Stage on Lincoln Road and at Wynwoood Walls. See the free screenings at both locations Saturday through March 11 from 6 until 10 p.m.
“These screenings and events will help propel Miami’s growing film scene to the next level,” said Jaie Laplante, Executive Director of Miami International Film Festival. “South Floridians and visitors will experience the art of film in a new environment and we’re excited to introduce a new way of showcasing the diverse work of our talented 2012 filmmakers.”
The 10-day film fest also includes a short by Miami artists, a sneak peak of the new Starz series Magic City, the Miami premiere of Cuban zombie flick Juan of the Dead, and plenty of eye-opening documentaries.
