I'm not a mom, but I have one, my partner is one and I see year after year the lighthearted joy Mother's Day brings. Whether it's a bunch of flowers, handmade artwork by the kids or a homemade brunch, Mother's Day is as big or small as you want to make it.
Stargazer Lilies
I find it so much fun to delight my mom with a special bunch of her favorite Stargazer lilies, or encourage my kids to get something special for their mom. One year it was literally a single leaf my son found at the park... and my wife was thrilled.
The cynics of the world call Mother's Day a "Hallmark Holiday," claiming occasions such as this are purely motivated by commercialism and consumerism. I ask these people, what could be more pure than celebrating the woman who brought you into this world? Mother's Day may very well trump all other holidays, since without moms having babies all the other holidays would be moot.
Some who seemingly care deeply say, "celebrate your mom every day." Although this is great plan, I would be willing to bet that these well-meaning people drop the ball after about one day, this is a cop-out.
I don't get the resistance so many people voice about Mother's Day. Did you know this year is actually the 100th anniversary of the holiday? This isn't some newfangled, marketing hype thing like "Black Friday" or "Cyber Monday."
On May 9th, 1914, Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation naming the second Sunday in May as a day for "public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country."
This is pretty straight forward. Let's get in the spirit here people!
I like reasons to celebrate, and there is no one on this planet that deserves your recognition more than your mom.
Check your attitude and get on board, Mother's Day is this Sunday. Moms like Mother's Day.
