8 Reasons We Love Dogs On National Dog Day (And The Rest Of The Year, Too)

8 Reasons To Share The Love On National Dog Day

It's National Dog Day, and at HuffPost Green we're celebrating all the reasons dogs really are our best friends. Where would we be without them?

Started in 2004, National Dog Day celebrates our love of dogs of all shapes and sizes. Colleen Paige, who started the holiday, says on her website that its purpose is "to honor dogs, to give them 'a day'," and to show our appreciation "for their endearing patience, unquestioning loyalty, for their work protecting our streets, homes and families as Police K-9’s, Military Working Dogs, Guide Dogs and Therapy Dogs." National Dog Day is a day to support the ownership of all breeds and consider donating to a shelter.

If you're thinking about bringing home a new canine family member, check out the ASPCA, The Shelter Pet Project, Petfinder.com or a local shelter for info about how you can change a dog's life through adoption.
