National Gay & Lesbian Sports Hall Of Fame Announces First Inductees

Jason Collins, Billie Jean King And Others Get Major Gay Honor In Chicago

In May, it was announced that the nonprofit National Gay & Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame for gay athletes and allies would be launched in Chicago.

At the time, Director and Board Chairman Bill Gubrud said he wanted to debunk the myth that gay people don't enjoy sports, as CNS News noted. As Out Magazine now reports, the list of the first inductees, including athletes, sports journalists, teams and more has been released.

Among those inducted are NBA center Jason Collins, tennis legends Billie Jean King, Renee Richards and Martina Navratilova; professional boxer Orlando Cruz, ESPN contributors LZ Granderson and Christina Kahrl and former Los Angeles Dodgers player Glenn Burke.

The organization will continue to accept nominations through June. On Aug. 2 the induction ceremony will take place in Chicago at the Center on Halsted.
