Not-so-breaking news: Women journalists produce some pretty fantastic work. Though this (hopefully) isn't surprising to anyone, it seems that the American Society of Magazine Editors, has finally decided to acknowledge talented female journos at the same rate as their male colleagues.
This year female writers snagged 17 of the National Magazine Awards' 34 nominations -- exactly 50 percent. Last year, when the finalists were announced, women were noticeably underrepresented and completely shut out of five of the most prestigious categories: feature writing, essays and criticism, profile writing, reporting, and columns and commentary. "Sounds like a regular frat party," wrote the New York Daily News' Alexander Nazaryan at the time.
The American Society of Magazine Editors announced the 2013 nominees on April 1, and this year there are female nominees in every category. No men were nominated in the Public Interest category and only one woman was nominated for essays and criticism, but there was overall gender parity.
"It's depressing that 'women write good stuff' is news, and it feels silly to congratulate ASME for doing its job -- honoring the best writers in their field, including those who aren't dudes -- but it's a dramatic improvement, and we're psyched," wrote Jezebel's Katie J.M. Baker.
