Seattle's famous Soundgarden, best known for hard-rocking 90s grunge hits like "Black Hole Sun" and "Jesus Christ Pose," have released their first song in 15 years.
The song, called "Live to Rise," is on the soundtrack for the upcoming summer action movie "The Avengers."
In an interview with the BJ Shea Morning Experience on Seattle radio station KISW, Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell said the four minute song was written specifically for "The Avengers," and that it is the only new song on the movie's soundtrack.
Cornell said the song had to have a degree of broad appeal due to the film's diverse potential audience, but that "First and foremost it had to be a Soundgarden song." That much is apparent from the song's titanic opening riff, which will clearly appeal to tried-and-true fans of the band.
For a hard rock song, "Live to Rise" has a beguilingly catchy refrain, and also features the nimble drumming characteristic of the band's long-time percussionist Matt Cameron.
Cornell also said that the band has nearly completed recording a new album.
Soundgarden reunited in 2010 after a 13-year hiatus. The band formed in Seattle in 1984 and is widely considered to have been essential in the creation of the grunge subgenre of rock 'n' roll, which it helped popularize through its classic 1994 album, "Superunknown."
