The New York City Department of Transportation opened up 7 miles of Manhattan streets Saturday to pedestrians and bicyclists as part of its Summer Streets program.
Photographer Dan Nguyen took a stroll from the Brooklyn Bridge all the way up to 72nd street in perfect sunny summer weather (before all the rain!) and seems to have had a wonderful time. "Really, it was probably the best one-day public event I’ve ever attended in the city," he writes on his "Eye Heart New York" tumblr.
Summer Streets is a part of an effort to give crowded New Yorkers some space to breathe in our busy city during the dog days of summer and is modeled after events around the world like Bogotá, Colombia's Ciclovia, Paris Plage, and even New York's own Museum Mile.
Look below to see mid-street yoga sessions, sandcastles in the middle of intersections and other photos of New Yorkers occupying roads usually busy with traffic and honking horns.
