Whoopi Goldberg and Laura Benanti are just two of the bold-faced names lending their talents to Radio City's New York Spring Spectacular, set to debut in March 2015.
Goldberg will voice the Statue of Liberty, one of several Manhattan landmarks incorporated into the production, while Benanti -- who nabbed a Tony Award in 2008 for "Gypsy" and can currently be seen on ABC's "Nashville" -- will headline the show as Jenna, a character described in press materials as a billionaire who is "about to embark on an unforgettable New York City adventure" with the Radio City Rockettes.

In addition to news of Goldberg and Benanti's involvement, officials also unveiled the first artistic renderings of the Spring Spectacular, which will open at the Radio City Musical Hall on March 26, 2015 and is currently set to run through through May 3, at a Dec. 9 press event. As co-creative director Diane Paulus noted, the show is conceived as "a love letter" to New York and a counterpoint of sorts to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, incorporating fashion, sports and architectural elements of the city.
The creative team includes director/choreographer Warren Carlyle, along with co-creative directors Randy Weiner and Diane Paulus. Also participating are choreographer Mia Michaels and playwright Joshua Harmon, while Harvey Weinstein will produce the show.
"The fact that this Spring Spectacular is a love letter to the city that I choose to live in, that I truly think is spectacular, is not lost on me," Carlyle told reporters. "This is a very special, very magical show for all of us ... [the Rockettes] are the most beautiful, sexiest, smartest, most dynamic group, [and] I wanted to re-imagine what these women do."
To be fair, Radio City's spring show has had a checkered history. The original incarnation, titled "Heart and Lights," was slated to debut this March but canceled less than a week before its first performance due to "artistic problems," The New York Times first reported.
But the show's cast and crew are optimistic that the latest concept, which Michaels says is "about new beginnings and fresh starts," will succeed.
“It’s every actor, singer and performer’s dream to be appearing on The Great Stage at Radio City Music Hall,” Benanti said in an email statement. “I can’t wait to celebrate spring in New York with this phenomenal show."
