Nick And Jess: 'New Girl' Creator Liz Meriwether Talks Makeout Scenes (VIDEO)

'It's Really Fun To Watch Them Make Out'

In The Hollywood Reporter's comedy showrunner Emmy roundtable (above), "New Girl" creator Liz Meriwether talked about finding the right time to get Nick and Jess together.

"It felt like holding it off any longer, it would feel like we were playing with the audience," she says in the video (at the 10:10 mark). "It felt organic, and it was the right time to do it. I don't really believe in the 'they kiss and the spark of the show is gone.' I think that when people come together, it creates so many more opportunities for story and conflict."

She went on to say that getting the will-they-won't-they couple together "really helped our show." "They're just really good at kissing and stuff. It's really fun to watch them make out a lot," Meriwether continued with Jess-like glee. "We don't have to write as many jokes because they're making out, you know?"

Deschanel isn't complaining about the makeout scenes with Johnson, but they do mean more breath mints.

"Makeup artists have to carry mints ... all the time," she revealed of her many on-screen kisses on "Live! With Kelly And Michael" last month.

"New Girl" returns to Fox in fall 2013.
