Nostalgia for an Election Not Yet Over

Andrew M. Cuomo, who is about to turn 53, pointed to his graying hair to emphasize that he'd been around for a while. The gesture was intended to give him standing to make the sweeping claim he was about to offer at a campaign rally on Sunday on the Upper West Side. "This," he told a crowd that was sparse for a neighborhood that prides itself on political activism, "is the most important election in my lifetime."

No doubt it is -- for Andrew Cuomo. Unless every pollster is completely addled, Mr. Cuomo will end Tuesday night as New York's governor-elect.

For everyone else, it is merely the most important election ever since the last most important election ever. That was probably in 2008, but who can remember? In Twitter years, which seem to be even longer than dog years, that was a lifetime ago.
