What do you get when you combine classical and popular music, American and international musicians, opera with cabaret chamber music and rock? These are just some of the combinations you'll find at the Ecstatic Music Festival. This year's festival includes 10 concerts, with notable pairings including classical pianist Simone Dinnerstein with folk singer-songwriter Tift Merritt and the rock band Deerhoof with the contemporary ensemble Dal Niente performing a new work by Brazilian composer Marcos Balter.
In dance, Trisha Brown, one of the most widely acclaimed choreographers of the postmodern era, brings the final two works of her career -- "I'm Going to Toss My Arms - If You Catch Them They're Yours" and "Les Yeux et L'ame" -- to the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
In the wake of World War II, Japanese society entered a profound period of introspection and then innovation in the arts. Nowhere was this more evident than in Tokyo. The city transformed itself from the capital of a war-torn nation to an international center for the arts, culture and commerce over a period of 15 years. Tokyo 1955-1970: A New Avant-Garde at the Museum of Modern Art is the first exhibit to focus on the city during this remarkable period.
In New Haven, the Yale University Art Gallery recently celebrated the grand opening of its renovated and expanded museum. The expansion has allowed Yale to combine three generations of its architectural history and allows visitors to fully experience the depth and sweep of the gallery's holdings, which range from ancient sculptures and European and American paintings to Indo-Pacific and contemporary art.
